Where the Dal Pozzolo surname comes from

Dal Pozzolo, pronounced Dal Pozzòlo, is made of two pieces. Pozzolo is the diminutive of pozzo, “well”: the “little well.” Dal, “from the,” tells where someone came from: “the one who comes from the Pozzolo.”

It’s the typical way in Veneto and Friuli of forming place-name surnames, like Dal Lago or Dal Molin. Whoever lived near that little well, or came from the place that bore its name, became “the one from the Pozzolo” to everyone. Over time the nickname passed to the children.

A village that grew up around its wells

In the Berici Hills, in the Vicenza area, there’s a small hamlet called, precisely, Pozzolo. For centuries its people had to find water by digging by hand. A little farther north, another town shows perfectly how a well becomes a family’s name, with documents from almost a thousand years ago. Both stories are in the PDF.

Where the Dal Pozzolos live today

Dal Pozzolo is one of the rarest surnames in Italy: in Italy the people who carry it number a few dozen. As many, and even more, live on the other side of the ocean, in Brazil and Argentina. They got there with the great Venetian emigration, and in Argentina the surname is written as one word. The numbers country by country and the surname’s cousins are in the PDF.

Variants

The same well gave other surnames, with or without the “Dal,” as two words or one. The PDF explains where each one comes from.

It can’t be said for certain. When a surname is this rare, it’s more likely that many of those who carry it share a common ancestor, but it remains a theory. To check it you need birth records and parish registers.

Is there a Dal Pozzolo family coat of arms?

No. A coat of arms belonged to one specific family, to one branch. Dal Pozzolo was born among farmers in the Venetian hills, working people who never had a coat of arms.
