Where the Abate surname comes from

Abate comes from the Church Latin abbas and, before that, from the Aramaic abbā, “father.” The abbot was the monks’ father, the head of an abbey.

Real abbots had no legitimate children, so the surname began as a nickname. It could point to someone who worked for an abbey or lived on its land. Or to a serious, respected person, with the authority of a father. In Piedmont the word meant something else entirely, tied to village festivals: the PDF tells that story.

An Abate in the Vespers

In 1282 Sicily rose up against the French of Charles of Anjou. Among the lords who planned the revolt was an Abate from Trapani. He fought for almost twenty years, at sea as well, until his last battle. The PDF tells his story, and those of two other famous Abates from Modena and Calabria.

Where the Abates live today

There are about 4,900 Abate families in Italy. The surname is common across the South, with two hearts: Campania and Sicily. Families who moved up from the South in the 1900s brought it to Lombardy. The town where it ranks number one, though, is in Piedmont: Castel Boglione, in the Monferrato hills near Asti, home to an old, separate line. The region-by-region map and the countries around the world the Abates reached are in the PDF.

Variants

The same “father” gave rise to different forms: with a double b, with the article attached, or in the feminine. The PDF explains where each one comes from.

FAQ

What does the surname Abate mean?

It comes from the word abate, the abbot who headed a monastery, which goes back to the Aramaic abbā, “father.” It began as a nickname for someone who worked for an abbey or for a person with the authority of a father.

Are the Abates descended from an abbot?

Almost never. Real abbots had no legitimate children. The surname was a nickname, given to people who worked for an abbey, lived on its land or were respected like a father.

Is Abate a surname from Campania or from Sicily?

Both: Campania and Sicily are the two hearts of the surname. Its record, though, is in Piedmont, in Castel Boglione, home to an old, separate line.

Are Abate and Abbate the same surname?

They share the same origin. In central and southern Italy the word was often pronounced with a double b, and that is how Abbate was born, strongest of all in Sicily. Until the 1800s the same family may appear in the records under different forms.

Is Abate an Albanian surname?

No. It is an Italian surname that also entered the Arbëreshë villages of Calabria, where people still speak the Albanian brought centuries ago by exiles from the Balkans.

Are all Abates related?

No. The surname was born many times, in many different places, among families that were not related. To trace your own story you need birth records and parish registers.

Is the Abate surname noble?

The surname itself is not a sign of nobility. It was carried by families of every walk of life: farmers, craftsmen, fishermen, soldiers. Almost none of them ever had a coat of arms.

Is there an Abate family coat of arms?

Some Abate families in Sicily, Naples and Savigliano had one, each its own. There is no coat of arms that belongs to all Abates.
