Where the Squadrito surname comes from

Scholars don’t give a single explanation for Squadrito, and to be honest its origin is called “debated.” Almost all of them, though, start from the same Sicilian word, squatritu. The most widely accepted reading is “shrewd, clever”: the nickname of a sharp, sensible person. There’s also another one, tied to the looks of the family’s founder. And there’s a popular theory that surname dictionaries don’t confirm. The PDF compares them.

A town by the sea

The surname has a clear heart: Spadafora, a town overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea just west of Messina. Here the Squadritos have been among the local surnames for generations. In a small town that means a few families, but old ones. Around Messina the surname has been documented since at least the 1700s. The PDF shows where its traces are found, and how to follow them.

Where the Squadritos live today

Squadrito is a rare surname: there are about 270 families in Italy, and more than nine out of ten live in Sicily. Its heart is the Tyrrhenian coast between Messina and Milazzo. Outside the island there are thin branches, mostly in Lazio and Lombardy, that left in the 1900s. Around the world there are about 1,500 Squadritos. The region-by-region map and the countries around the world they reached are in the PDF.

Variants

Alongside Squadrito live two closely related forms, most likely born from the same Sicilian word. The PDF explains which ones they are, and why they change in the registers.

FAQ

What does the surname Squadrito mean?

Its origin is debated. Almost all scholars start from the Sicilian squatritu, read either as “shrewd, clever, practical” or as “short, stocky.” It was a nickname that later became a surname.

Is Squadrito a Sicilian surname?

Yes. More than nine out of ten Squadrito families live in Sicily, mostly around Messina. Its emblematic town is Spadafora, on the sea just west of Messina.

Does Squadrito come from squadrato, “squared”?

It’s an idea that gets around, but surname dictionaries don’t confirm it. It remains a popular theory, not a real origin.

Are Squadrito and Squatrito the same surname?

They’re closely related forms, most likely born from the same Sicilian word. In old registers the same family may appear as Squadrito, Squatrito or Squadritto. That doesn’t mean, though, that all families with these forms are related.

Are all Squadritos related?

Not necessarily. But the surname is rare and tied to a few towns: those who bear it in Spadafora have a good chance of belonging to related families. To find out you need birth records and parish registers.

Is the Squadrito surname noble?

The surname itself is not a sign of nobility: it most likely comes from the nickname of an ordinary person. Almost no Squadrito family ever had a coat of arms.

Is there a Squadrito family coat of arms?

Some Squadrito family may have had its own seal, but it belonged to that branch and that town. There is no coat of arms that belongs to all Squadritos.
