Where the Scuderi surname comes from
Scuderi probably comes from a trade: the scudiero, or squire, the helper who carried the knight’s shield and weapons. In medieval Latin it was scutarius, from scutum, “shield.”
In a town there was “the squire,” and his children became “the squire’s folks.” The name stayed with the family long after the trade had disappeared. In Sicily the form that won out was Scuderi.
A mountain with your name
In the Peloritani Mountains, above the Ionian Sea, there’s a mountain called Monte Scuderi. From its flat summit, on a clear day, you can see Mount Etna and the Aeolian Islands. A friar from Alì said that a treasure is hidden up there. The PDF tells who tried to take it, and how it ended.
Where the Scuderis live today
Scuderi is a Sicilian surname, and its homeland is the province of Catania. There are about 2,600 families in Italy. The town where it’s strongest is Misterbianco, just outside Catania, where it’s the third most common surname. Outside Sicily you’ll find it mostly in Lombardy, Lazio and Piedmont, where emigrants arrived in the 1900s. The map and the countries around the world they reached are in the PDF.

FAQ
What does the surname Scuderi mean?
It probably comes from the scudiero, the squire who carried the knight’s shield and weapons. The trade became a nickname and then a family name.
Is Scuderi a Sicilian surname?
Yes. It’s the 72nd most common surname in Sicily and the 21st in the province of Catania; in Misterbianco it’s the third in town. It reached the rest of Italy with the emigration of the 1900s.
Are Scuderi and Scudieri the same surname?
They share the same origin, the squire. Scudieri is the form from Campania, Scuderi the Sicilian one. In old documents the same surname may be spelled in several ways.
Does the surname Scuderi have to do with the scuderia, the stable?
Yes, it’s the same family of words. Squires spent their days among weapons and horses, and the place where the horses were kept took its name from them.
Are all Scuderis related?
Not necessarily. Sharing a surname doesn’t mean being related, and two Scuderi families can have completely different stories. To trace your own you need birth records and parish registers.
Is the Scuderi surname noble?
The surname itself is not a sign of nobility. A squire could be a simple man-at-arms or a young nobleman serving a knight. The name alone doesn’t tell a family’s rank.
Is there a Scuderi family coat of arms?
There is no coat of arms that belongs to all Scuderis. A coat of arms belonged to a specific family and passed to its direct descendants: two Scuderi families could have different ones, or none at all.
