Where the Scalzo surname comes from

Scalzo comes from a nickname: it was what people in town called someone who went barefoot. There could be two stories behind it. Sometimes it was poverty, when there were no shoes. Other times it was faith: people walked barefoot because of a vow or as penance, like certain pilgrims and certain friars.

From the ring to the fencing strip

The surname traveled with the people who carried it. A son of emigrants, raised in New York, became a world boxing champion. Another Scalzo stood on the top step of the Olympic podium in saber. The PDF tells their stories, and those of two other Scalzos.

Where the Scalzo families live today

Scalzo is a southern surname with two old homes. There are about 1,300 families in Italy. The largest group is in central Calabria, around Catanzaro. The second is inland Sicily, between Caltanissetta and San Cataldo. A more recent branch, which moved there in the 1900s, lives in Lombardy. There are more Scalzos outside Italy than in it. The PDF has the region-by-region map and the countries around the world they reached.

Variants

Only a few sister forms grew out of the same nickname, one in the plural and one with the article. The PDF explains where each one is found.

FAQ

What does the surname Scalzo mean?

It comes from the nickname “scalzo,” given to someone who went barefoot. It could be out of poverty, when there were no shoes, or because of a religious vow, like pilgrims and the discalced, or barefoot, friars.

Is Scalzo a Calabrian or a Sicilian surname?

Both. Its largest group is in central Calabria, around Catanzaro; the second is inland Sicily, between Caltanissetta and San Cataldo. A branch that arrived in the 1900s lives in Lombardy.

Are Scalzo and Lo Scalzo the same surname?

They come from the same nickname. Lo Scalzo, with the article, is typical of southern Calabria and the Reggio Calabria area. The Scalzo families of the Catanzaro area and the Lo Scalzo families of the Reggio area are close but separate stories.

Are all Scalzos related?

Not necessarily: the nickname arose on its own in Calabria and in Sicily. But people who carry it in the same corner of Italy have a good chance of sharing distant roots. To be sure, you need birth records and parish registers.

Is the Scalzo surname noble?

No. It comes from a nickname tied to poverty or to faith, and almost no Scalzo family ever had a coat of arms.

Is there a Scalzo family coat of arms?

Some Scalzo families may once have had their own coat of arms, but those were the arms of that branch. No single coat of arms belongs to every Scalzo.

Where can I search for Scalzo ancestors?

In Calabria civil registration begins in 1809, in Sicily in 1820. Before those dates, you search the parish registers, kept from the Council of Trent (1563) onward.
