Where the Rapisarda surname comes from

Rapisarda is a Sicilian nickname that became a surname. Scholars give two explanations of its meaning. The first leads to the fish market: apri sarde, “open the sardines,” the name for someone who cleaned and sold sardines. The second is less kind: from rapa, “to grab.”

No record says which of the two is right. What is certain is that the surname was born in the Catania area.

The poet who changed his signature

The most famous Rapisarda in history signed with a different surname. He was a nineteenth-century poet from Catania, a great rival of Carducci. The PDF tells why he chose that signature, and which name stayed on his official records.

Where the Rapisardas live today

Rapisarda is almost one hundred percent Sicilian. There are about 2,600 families in Italy, concentrated in the province of Catania. The town where it is number one is Belpasso, on the slopes of Mount Etna. Outside Sicily you’ll find it mostly in Lombardy. It is a surname that stayed home: almost nine Rapisardas out of ten live in Italy. The map and the countries around the world where they settled are in the PDF.

Variants

Many Italian surnames have ten or twenty variants; Rapisarda has almost none. It has stayed faithful to its form and to its land, between Catania and Mount Etna.

FAQ

What does the surname Rapisarda mean?

Its origin is debated. It may come from “apri sarde,” the fishmonger who cleaned sardines, or from rapa, “to grab.” No record says which of the two is right.

Is Rapisarda a Sicilian surname?

Yes, almost one hundred percent. It was born in the Catania area: it is the sixth most common surname in the province of Catania and the top one in Belpasso.

Are Rapisarda and Rapisardi the same surname?

Yes, they have the same origin. Rapisardi is the plural form, much rarer and also from Catania. In old records the same family may appear in both forms.

Are all Rapisardas related?

Not necessarily. Sharing a surname doesn’t mean being related, and two Rapisarda families can have very different stories. To rebuild your own you need birth records and parish registers.

Is the Rapisarda surname noble?

The surname itself doesn’t mean nobility. It was born from a market nickname, among ordinary people: fishermen, farmers, craftsmen.

Is there a Rapisarda family coat of arms?

No single coat of arms belongs to every Rapisarda. If a Rapisarda family had a coat of arms, it was theirs alone: only records can tell whether your family descends from that one.

Is Tony Effe’s real name Rapisarda?

Yes: the Roman rapper and actor, born in 1991, is registered as Nicolò Rapisarda. He is one of the eight Rapisardas whose stories are told in the PDF.
