Where the Pignalosa surname comes from

Scholars are cautious about the origin of Pignalosa and call it “obscure.” Two roads have been suggested. The first links it to Pignola, a mountain town near Potenza: “the one who comes from Pignola.” The second points to the pine cone and the pine tree, as a nickname or as a place name. Neither is certain. But there is one more clue, in sixteenth-century Cava de’ Tirreni. The PDF tells it, along with the problem of dates in the first theory.

A tower almost five hundred years old

In the summer of 1542, new walls were being built along the sea in Crotone. The name Pignalosa already appears in the records of the works: it belonged to a tower in the older walls. The PDF tells why it had that name, and what was kept there later. In Naples, meanwhile, a Pignalosa family practiced an unusual trade for a long time. From that family came a playwright who is a classic today.

Where the Pignalosas live today

Pignalosa is a rare surname: there are about 330 families in Italy. It has three centers, in Naples and the towns around Vesuvius, in Ginosa in the Taranto area and in Crotone. The town where it is strongest is Portici, at the foot of Vesuvius, where it is the 30th most common surname. After Campania come Apulia and Lazio. Worldwide, nine Pignalosas out of ten live in Italy. The region-by-region map and the countries around the world where they settled are in the PDF.

FAQ

What does the surname Pignalosa mean?

Scholars consider its origin obscure. There are two theories: “the one who comes from Pignola,” a town near Potenza, or the pine cone and the pine tree. Neither is certain.

Is Pignalosa a Neapolitan surname?

Largely, yes. The heart of the surname is Campania, around Naples and the towns near Vesuvius, and in Portici it is the 30th most common surname. Two other centers are in Ginosa, near Taranto, and in Crotone.

How old is the Pignalosa surname?

In 1542, in Crotone, a tower in the walls was already called “la Pignalosa.” In sixteenth-century Cava de’ Tirreni, Pignaloso was also a first name, and many surnames were born from the father’s name.

Are all Pignalosas related?

Not necessarily: the surname has more than one root and no certain founder. But it is rare, and within one town or city two Pignalosa families are more likely to be related. To find out you need birth records and parish registers.

Is the Pignalosa surname noble?

The surname itself doesn’t mean nobility. It has no certain founder, and almost no Pignalosa family ever had a coat of arms.

Is there a Pignalosa family coat of arms?

If a Pignalosa family of Naples had a coat of arms, it belonged to that specific branch. No single coat of arms belongs to every Pignalosa in Italy.
