Where the Minio surname comes from

Minio is a surname with a debated origin and two possible paths. The first leads to a personal name: from Erminio or Firmino you get to Mino, and from Mino to Minio. The second leads to a color, the bright red that people in ancient times made from lead, called minio. It could have been the nickname of someone with red hair, or of someone who worked with that color.

An old house in the lagoon

In Venice the surname has a very long history. The Minio were a patrician family of the Republic, with senators, ambassadors and governors of cities. According to tradition, they came to the lagoon fleeing the invasions of the Dark Ages. The PDF tells who the founder was, and which Minio had the walls of a fortress raised in the East.

Where the Minio families live today

Minio is a rare surname: there are about 240 families in Italy. Most of them live in Sicily, in the provinces of Agrigento and Catania. A second group, with an old history, is in Veneto, around Venice. But one town where the Minios count for a lot is in Liguria: in Murialdo, in the province of Savona, they are among the top twenty-five surnames. The region-by-region map and the countries around the world they reached are in the PDF.

Variants

The PDF records no common variants of Minio. Among its cousins by name are Mini and Minato.

FAQ

What does the surname Minio mean?

Its origin is debated. It may come from Mino, a short form of Erminio or Firmino: “the one from Mino’s family.” Or from minio, the red made from lead, as a nickname for someone with red hair.

Is Minio a Sicilian or a Venetian surname?

Both. Today most Minios live in Sicily, between Agrigento and Catania; in Venice the surname has an old history. In all likelihood these are two different stories, born independently at the two ends of Italy.

Are all Minios related?

Not necessarily, especially if one is Sicilian and the other Venetian. Within the same town, though, with a surname this rare the odds go up quite a bit. To find out you need birth records and parish registers.

Is the Minio surname noble?

In Venice the Minio were a patrician family, still among the recognized nobility when the Republic fell in 1797. People who carry the surname today, especially in Sicily, don’t descend from them for that reason.

Is there a Minio family coat of arms?

A Venetian branch of the Minio had its own coat of arms, but it was the mark of that branch and that family. No single coat of arms belongs to every Minio.

How many Minios are there in Italy?

About 240 families, a little under a thousand people. It is a rare surname, and outside Sicily and Veneto it becomes even rarer and more scattered.
