Where the Miceli surname comes from

Miceli comes from Michele, the Italian Michael, one of the most beloved names in Italy. That -c- in place of -ch- is the mark of southern pronunciation: Micheli became Miceli. The final -i pointed to the family, “Michele’s people.” For some Calabrian families, scholars also mention a place called San Miceli.

A name born from a question

The name Michele comes from Hebrew and holds a question that is also a battle cry. In Sicily, in the countryside of Salemi, there is even a place called San Miceli. There, at the end of the 1800s, an archaeologist brought to light something that had been buried for centuries. Both stories are in the PDF.

Where the Miceli families live today

Miceli is found all over Italy, with about 4,900 families. Its heart is Sicily, where it is the region’s 43rd most common surname, and its second heart is Calabria. From there, in the 1900s, many families moved to northern Italy and Rome. Outside Italy the Micelis followed the great emigration routes from the South. The region-by-region map and the countries around the world they reached are in the PDF.

Variants

The same Michele gave different forms in the North and the South, with “Di” and without. The PDF shows where each one is concentrated.

FAQ

What does the surname Miceli mean?

It comes from the name Michele, in its southern form: “Michele’s people.” In Hebrew, the name Michele (Michael) means “Who is like God?”

Is Miceli a Sicilian or a Calabrian surname?

Both. Sicily is its heart: it is the region’s 43rd most common surname and the 20th in the province of Agrigento. Calabria comes second. It reached northern Italy and Rome with 20th-century migration.

Are Miceli and Micheli the same surname?

They share the same origin, the name Michele. Micheli is the form of central and northern Italy, with the “hard” pronunciation; Miceli is the southern one.

Are Miceli and Di Miceli the same family?

They can be. Until the 1800s the surname was written by whoever kept the register. The same family may appear once with “Di” and once without.

Are all Micelis related?

No. Michele was such a common name that the surname was born in a great many towns, each with its own founder. Two Miceli families almost never share an ancestor.

Is the Miceli surname noble?

The surname itself doesn’t indicate nobility. It was born from a baptismal name in many different towns, almost always among farmers, shepherds and craftsmen.

Is there a Miceli family coat of arms?

No single coat of arms belongs to every Miceli. If a Miceli family had its own coat of arms, it was the mark of that family, in that town, in that century.
