Where the Lanaro surname comes from

Lanaro, pronounced Lanàro, comes from a trade: the lanaro was someone who worked wool, lana in Italian. He could be the spinner, the weaver or the merchant who bought and sold it. The nickname passed to his children and became the family name. The ending -aro is typical of trade names in Italy’s Northeast.

The wool town

If there is one town where the surname sounds at home, it is Schio, in the hills north of Vicenza: they called it the “Manchester of Italy.” Between Schio and the nearby town of Malo, in the 1900s, four Lanaros were born or grew up who left their mark. The PDF tells who they were, and what ties them to a famous book about the Veneto of the old days.

Where the Lanaros live today

Lanaro is a rare surname, with about 650 families in Italy. It is almost entirely from the Veneto, and above all from the Vicenza area, with its heart between Schio, Malo and the valleys of the Pasubio. The town where it is strongest is just across the border, in Trentino: Terragnolo, where it is the 11th most common surname. Outside Italy, the Lanaros followed the roads of Venetian emigration. The region-by-region map and the countries around the world where they settled are in the PDF.

Variants

The same trade gave a cousin in Central Italy and a very rare form in Sicily. The PDF shows where each one is concentrated.
