Where the Fregapane surname comes from

Fregapane is a nickname born from bread. The oldest reading leads to “breaking bread,” from the Latin frangere panem. In Sicilian, though, sfragàri means to waste or squander: the nickname could also point to a big eater. Scholars don’t all agree, and in all honesty the origin remains debated.

A powerful cousin in Rome

The same word lies behind the name of a powerful Roman family around the year 1000. At first that name was written exactly Fregapane. That family even gave its name to a word used in pastry making. The PDF tells who they were, and why their name spoke of bread.

Where the Fregapanes live today

Fregapane is a rare and entirely Sicilian surname. There are about 80 families in Italy, and nearly all of them live in the inland area around Agrigento. The town where it is strongest is Sant’Angelo Muxaro, in the Platani valley: there it is the 28th most common surname. The few families in the North arrived with the emigration of the 1900s. The region-by-region map and the numbers around the world are in the PDF.

Variants

Alongside Fregapane lives a form with an “a,” much more common and also from the Agrigento area. The PDF explains why one branch took one vowel and another branch the other.

FAQ

What does the Fregapane surname mean?

It is a nickname tied to bread. One reading has it come from “breaking bread”; another from the Sicilian sfragàri, “to waste,” pointing to a big eater. The origin remains debated.

Is Fregapane a Sicilian surname?

Yes. Nearly all Fregapanes live in Sicily, in the inland area around Agrigento. The few families in Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto arrived with the emigration of the 1900s.

Are Fregapane and Fragapane the same surname?

They share the same nickname and the same root. In Sicily the “e” and the “a” often swap, and one branch settled on one form and another branch on the other. Fragapane is more common, with about 460 families, and it also comes from the Agrigento area.

Are all Fregapanes related?

Not necessarily: a nickname could be born for more than one person, at different times. But the surname is so rare that the odds go up a lot. To be sure, you need birth records and parish registers.

How many Fregapanes are there in Italy?

Very few: about 80 families, just over two hundred people in all. Nearly all of them still live in the Agrigento area, and only rarely did a family cross the ocean.

Is the Fregapane surname noble?

No. It comes from a village nickname, in the Agrigento area, not from a noble house with a coat of arms.

Is there a Fregapane family coat of arms?

No coat of arms is recorded for the Fregapane surname. A Roman family with a related name had its own coats of arms, but they were theirs, not those of the people who carry the surname in Sicily today.
