Where the Feroce surname comes from

Feroce most likely comes from an old nickname. The word comes from the Latin ferox, ferocem. In the Middle Ages it didn’t have the dark meaning it has today: it meant proud, spirited, brave. It was the nickname of a man with a strong character, later handed down to his children.

A master builder far from home

The surname’s heartland is in the South, but one of its oldest traces lies at the other end of Italy. In 1710 a Feroce appears in Friuli, among the master builders on a construction site. The PDF tells who he was, and what that document can reveal.

Where the Feroce families live today

Feroce is a rare surname: about 440 people carry it in Italy. Its heartland is in Campania, in the Terra di Lavoro around Caserta, near Teano. A second group lives in Lazio, and an old branch in Calabria, around Vibo Valentia. Outside Italy the surname arrived with southern emigration in the 1800s and 1900s. The PDF has the region-by-region map and the countries around the world the Feroce families reached.

FAQ

What does the surname Feroce mean?

It is an old nickname, from the Latin ferox. In the Middle Ages feroce meant proud, spirited, brave: it described a man with a strong character, not a cruel man.

Is Feroce a surname from Campania?

Mostly, yes. Its heartland is in the province of Caserta, around Teano, where the surname is recorded from the 1700s. Other branches live in Lazio and Calabria.

How did a family come to be called Feroce?

The name came from the way a community described a person’s character. A courageous, fighting man could become “il feroce,” and the nickname passed to his children. Dante and Boccaccio also used the word in this sense.

Is Feroce a Calabrian surname?

In part. Calabria has a long-standing branch, with a historic presence around Vibo Valentia, in Polia. But the surname’s heartland is in Campania, in the province of Caserta, where the Feroce families are most numerous and have been rooted since the 1700s.

Are all Feroce families related?

Not necessarily. People with the same surname can come from different families and branches. To trace your own family’s story you need birth records and parish registers.

How many Feroce are there in Italy?

About 440 people, according to cautious estimates, and about 660 worldwide. The largest share lives in Campania.

Is the Feroce surname noble?

No. There is no record of an old noble Feroce house: the surname comes from a folk nickname of southern Italy.

Is there a Feroce family coat of arms?

No documented coat of arms is known. The ones sold online pair the name with a random crest, with no real connection to the family.
