Where the D’Oca surname comes from

D’Oca comes from the word oca, “goose,” which reaches us from the Late Latin auca, “water bird.” The opening D’ means “of”: D’Oca is “of the family of the Goose,” an old way of saying where someone came from. Scholars disagree on the explanation, though. For some the name comes from a place called Oca, for others from the bird, as a nickname. The two explanations don’t rule each other out.

A valley with your name

Scholars link the surname to a place in the North, yet almost all D’Oca families live beneath Etna. Among the hills of Veneto there is even a valley with this name. The PDF tells whether it really has anything to do with the Sicilian family, and what a Sicilian scholar says about it.

Where the D’Oca families live today

D’Oca is a rare surname: in all of Italy about fifty families carry it. Its heart is in Sicily, around Catania, in the towns at the foot of Etna. Outside the island there are only small groups in Lombardy, Sardinia, Abruzzo and Piedmont. Around Catania the name has been on record at least since the 1800s, and it is probably older. The PDF has the map and the towns where D’Oca families are found.

FAQ

What does the surname D’Oca mean?

It comes from the word oca, “goose.” For some scholars it comes from a place called Oca, a common place name in northern Italy; for others from the bird, as a nickname. The opening D’ means “of,” “of the family of the Goose.”

Is D’Oca a Sicilian surname?

Today, yes. Almost all the families live in Sicily, around Catania. Small groups are also found in Lombardy, Sardinia, Abruzzo and Piedmont.

How many D’Ocas are there in Italy?

Very few: about fifty families, roughly 140 people. With so few families, the threads are easy to follow from town to town.

Are D’Oca and Doca the same surname?

In Italy, Doca sometimes appears in the archives through transcription errors, so it’s worth searching for both forms. Abroad, on the other hand, Doca is a different surname, born from languages and histories that have nothing to do with the Sicilian family.

Are all D’Ocas related?

There’s no way to say without records. It is a surname of just a few families, and those who carry it can almost always trace it back to roots close by. To trace your own family’s story you need birth records and parish registers.

Is the D’Oca surname noble?

No. It is a rare surname born among ordinary people, from an everyday word, not from a noble house.

Is there a D’Oca family coat of arms?

No. No coat of arms is known for any D’Oca family. Watch out for drawings of a goose sold as the “surname coat of arms”: they are only a play on the name.
