Where the Cerruto surname comes from

Scholars follow two explanations for Cerruto. The first ties it to the cerro, the great oak of Italian woods, and to the many places named after that tree. The second, more widely accepted for southern Italy, traces it to Latin cirrus, a “curl”: a nickname for someone with frizzy hair. Which one is right cannot be said for certain.

A name with two possible explanations

A trait of the body, noticed and teased with affection by the neighbors, could become the name of a whole family. The PDF explains which theory is more convincing, and which very common surnames Cerruto may share a root with.

Where the Cerrutos live today

Cerruto is a rare Sicilian surname: about 1,100 people carry it in Italy, almost all in Sicily. Its heartland is the Ragusa area, with Modica at its center. The small groups in Piedmont, Lombardy and Lazio came with the emigration of the 1900s. Several hundred more Cerrutos live outside Italy, mostly in the Americas. The PDF has the region-by-region map and the countries around the world they reached.

FAQ

What does the surname Cerruto mean?

The origin is disputed. One explanation traces it to the cerro, the great oak of Italian woods. Another traces it to Latin cirrus, “curl,” a nickname for someone with frizzy hair.

Is Cerruto a Sicilian surname?

Yes. Almost all the Cerrutos of Italy live in Sicily, mostly in the Ragusa area. The strongest core is in Modica and the nearby towns.

Is Cerruto related to Ricci?

Only if the Latin cirrus explanation is right. In that case Cerruto and Ricci come from the same idea, the “curl” of hair. With the other explanation, the cerro oak, there is no link.

Are all Cerrutos related?

Without records, there is no way to say. Several Cerruto families can live in the same town with no close ties, and what often tells them apart is their household nicknames.

Is the Cerruto surname noble?

No. It most likely comes from an old nickname and not from a noble house. It was the surname of farmers, craftsmen and families from small towns.

Is there a Cerruto family coat of arms?

No. The surname has no strong heraldic tradition, and there is no coat of arms that belongs to all Cerrutos. If a family had one, it was theirs alone.

How many Cerrutos are there in the world?

Nearly two thousand. More than a thousand live in Italy. Outside Italy the largest group is in Bolivia, followed by the United States and Argentina.

Where do you look for Cerruto ancestors?

In Sicily, civil registration begins in 1820. Before that you use parish registers, which on the island go back to the 1500s. The starting point is almost always a specific town in the Ragusa area.
