Where the Brusati surname comes from

The origin of Brusati is debated, and scholars offer two theories. In the first it is a patronymic, born from the name of a distant ancestor. In the second it is a place name: in the Lombard and Piedmontese dialects brüsà means “burned” and described land cleared of brushwood by fire. Either way, behind the surname lies a personal name or a piece of land, and no trade.

Houses with lordly titles

The name Brusati also appears in families with titles, in the Novara and Milan areas. The PDF tells who held those titles, and which other Brusatis made a name for themselves.

Where the Brusatis live today

Brusati is a Northern surname and not a common one: about 1,300 people carry it in Italy, almost all divided between Piedmont and Lombardy. Its firmest base is the Novara area, and in Bellinzago Novarese it is one of the most common surnames in town. The Milan area and the plain toward the Ticino River count for almost as many as Piedmont. The PDF has the region-by-region map and the countries around the world they reached.

Variants

The close forms are few and rare, and one probably comes from a transcription error. The PDF explains which they are.

FAQ

What does the surname Brusati mean?

Its origin is debated. It may be a patronymic, born from the name of an old ancestor, or a place name tied to “burned” land, in dialect brüsà. Neither theory has been proven.

Is Brusati a Lombard or a Piedmontese surname?

Both, because its heartland is the plain between Novara and Milan. Almost half of Italian Brusatis live in Piedmont, mostly in the Novara area, and almost as many in Lombardy.

Does the Brusati surname have anything to do with Monticelli Brusati?

The same word appears in the name of the town of Monticelli Brusati, in the province of Brescia, where the second part refers to burned land. For the surname, the origin remains debated all the same.

Are Brusati and Brusato the same surname?

They may be related, or each may have come about on its own from the same idea of burned land. Brusato is also found in the North. Both forms are too rare for any firm conclusion.

Are all Brusatis related?

No. Sharing a surname means sharing an old root and the same part of the North, not being related. To find out you need birth records and parish registers.

Is the Brusati surname noble?

Some branches held titles, a lordly one in the Novara area and a count’s title in the Milan area. Carrying the surname does not mean descending from them.

Is there a Brusati family coat of arms?

Two Brusati houses each had their own coat of arms, but there is no coat of arms that belongs to everyone named Brusati.

Where do I look for Brusati ancestors?

In the North, unified civil records begin in 1866. Before that year, look in the parish registers of the Novara and Milan areas, except for the Napoleonic registers of the early 1800s.
