Where the Bianchi surname comes from

Bianchi is a surname born from a nickname. The first Bianchi stood out for something white: white or very blond hair, pale skin, a limewashed house. In some cases, though, the surname comes from a personal name or a place name.

The -i of Central and Northern Italy stands for the whole family, “those of the white one.” The word bianco, “white,” has a story of its own too: the Romans had a different word for white.

Whites and Blacks

At the end of the 1200s Florence split into two factions, the Whites and the Blacks, and Dante ended up in exile. A chronicler of the time tells where those names came from, and it’s the same mechanism that created the surname. The PDF also has the story of an orphan from Milan and a bicycle built for a queen.

Where the Bianchis live today

Bianchi is a surname of Central and Northern Italy, with about 31,600 families in the country. Its heart is Lombardy, and the city where it ranks number one is Como. Tuscany, Lazio and Emilia-Romagna follow. In Calabria there is even a village called Bianchi. The region-by-region map and the countries around the world the Bianchis reached are in the PDF.

Variants

The same nickname gave rise to singular forms, diminutives, augmentatives and a Venetian form. The PDF explains where each one comes from.

FAQ

What does the surname Bianchi mean?

“Those of the white one”: the family of a man nicknamed the white, for his hair, his pale skin or his limewashed house. The word bianco comes from the Germanic blank, “shining, bright.”

Is Bianchi a Lombard surname?

Mostly. Lombardy is the heart of the surname, and in Como it is the most common in the city. It is also very widespread in Tuscany, where it is the region’s third most common surname, and in Lazio.

Are Bianchi and Bianco the same surname?

They come from the same nickname. Bianchi is the plural form of Central and Northern Italy, Bianco the singular form of Piedmont and the South, and in Sicily there is also Lo Bianco.

Are all Bianchis related?

No. In thousands of towns there was a man called “the white,” and two Bianchi families almost always have no ties to each other. To trace your own story you need birth records and parish registers.

Is the Bianchi surname noble?

The surname itself is not a sign of nobility. There were ancient Bianchi houses in Florence and Milan, but most Bianchi families never had a coat of arms.

Is there a Bianchi family coat of arms?

Noble archives record a Bianchi family from Rome with its own coat of arms, and ancient houses in Florence and Milan. Each belonged to that branch: there is no coat of arms that belongs to all Bianchis.
