Where the Barone surname comes from

Barone comes from a Germanic word, baro, which meant “free man” or “warrior.” In the Middle Ages the same word became a title: the baron was the feudal lord who answered only to the king. As a surname it almost always began as a nickname, and it almost never points to a family title. The PDF explains how many ways it could have started.

From the fiefs of the South to the Alps

For centuries the countryside of the Kingdom of Naples and of Sicily belonged to the barons. In that world of fiefs, harvests and estate managers, the nickname could arise most easily. But the old traces cited by scholars also lead up into the mountains, all the way to the records of a 17th-century trial. Both stories are in the PDF.

Where the Barones live today

Barone is a surname found all over Italy, with about 10,000 families. The largest numbers are in Sicily and Campania, then in Apulia. The town where it is the top surname, though, is in the North: Vogogna, in Val d’Ossola. Outside Italy the Barones followed the routes of Southern emigration. The region-by-region map and the countries around the world they reached are in the PDF.

Variants

The same word gave rise to a form typical of Central and Northern Italy and to a rare form from Veneto. The PDF shows where each one is concentrated.

FAQ

What does the surname Barone mean?

It comes from the Germanic baro, “free man” or “warrior.” The word then became the title of the feudal lord, and from there a nickname common among ordinary people.

Are people named Barone descended from a baron?

Almost never. The real barons were few families, and they carried the surname of their house. Barone began mostly as a nickname: for someone who worked in a baron’s service, for someone who put on lordly airs, or as a joke.

Is Barone a Sicilian or a Campanian surname?

Both: the largest numbers are in Sicily and Campania, then in Apulia. In Sicily it is the island’s 34th most common surname and is strongest in the province of Ragusa. The town where it is the top surname, on the other hand, is Vogogna, in Piedmont.

Are Barone and Baroni the same surname?

They come from the same word. Baroni is the form of Central and Northern Italy. Until the 1800s the surname was written by whoever kept the register, so if you’re searching for your ancestors you should check every form.

Are all Barones related?

No. The nickname was born in many different places, among families that were not related. To trace your own story you need birth records and parish registers.

Is the Barone surname noble?

The surname itself is not a sign of nobility. It was born mostly among farmers, servants and craftsmen who only saw the barons from a distance.

Is there a Barone family coat of arms?

There were coats of arms of specific Barone families, in Molise and Liguria for example. They belonged to those families. There is no coat of arms that belongs to all Barones.
