Where the Bandiera surname comes from

Bandiera comes from a word everyone knows: the banner, the flag raised up high. Behind it lies an ancient root, banda, “sign, emblem,” which scholars trace back to Gothic. The surname may have begun as a nickname, or it may come from the old given name Bando. Both possibilities start from the same root.

A banner in the name

In 1844 two Venetian brothers with this surname landed in Calabria to raise the South in revolt. They became a symbol of the Risorgimento. The PDF tells who they were, how their venture ended, and who else has carried the surname down to our own day.

Where the Bandiera families live today

Bandiera is found all over Italy, where about 3,600 people carry it. Its heartland is Veneto, above all the Treviso area: in Caerano di San Marco it is among the most common surnames in town. Other old clusters live in Emilia, around Syracuse and near Rome. The PDF has the region-by-region map and the countries around the world they reached.

Variants

The same root gave rise to other Italian surnames, such as Banda, Bandi and Bandini: distant relatives, each with its own homeland.

FAQ

What does the surname Bandiera mean?

It comes from the word “bandiera,” the banner, the flag. Its root is the old word banda, “sign, emblem”; the surname may have begun as a nickname or come from the old given name Bando.

Is Bandiera a surname from Veneto?

Its heartland is in Veneto, above all the Treviso area. But it is found all over Italy, with old clusters between Bologna and Ferrara, around Syracuse and near Rome too.

Are the Bandieras related to the Bandiera brothers of the Risorgimento?

Not necessarily. The surname was born independently in several regions, among families with no blood ties. Sharing a surname with Attilio and Emilio Bandiera doesn’t make you their relatives.

Are all Bandieras related?

No. In different places, at the same time, someone was called “Bandiera” with no tie to the others. To trace your own family’s story you need birth records and parish registers.

Is the Bandiera surname noble?

The surname itself is not a sign of nobility: it comes from an everyday word. Some Bandiera families had a coat of arms of their own, but most never had one.

Is there a Bandiera family coat of arms?

Some Bandiera families, in different times and places, had their own coat of arms, tied to that branch. No single coat of arms belongs to every Bandiera, and a drawing with a flag is only a play on the name.

Where do you look for Bandiera ancestors?

In Veneto, civil records begin after Unification, around 1871. Before that date you look in parish registers, kept since the Council of Trent in 1563.
